Aboriginal contractor the leading firm for all-weather roads – Journal of Commerce

One of the most ambitious and difficult new road building projects in recent Manitoba history is moving ahead in the eastern side of Lake Winnipeg.

The land between Lake Winnipeg and the Ontario border is largely a land of forest, rock and water.

It is populated by about 30,000 mainly Aboriginal People living in 13 communities, which have historically been disadvantaged by lack of an all-weather road system in the area.

To this point, the isolated communities have had to rely on short-term winter roads for the bulk of their yearly needs.
