Aboriginal radio station coming to Vancouver in summer 2018 – Vancouver Sun

June 15, 2017

Vancouver is getting a new aboriginal radio station next summer.

CFNR Terrace has been granted an urban aboriginal radio licence for Vancouver by the CRTC, according to a news release. The new venture, CKUR 106.3 FM, plans to launch in Vancouver in the summer of 2018.

CFNR, which stands for Canada’s First Nations Radio, is one of the most successful aboriginal radio stations in Canada, broadcasting news and aboriginal sporting events to over 70 communities and over 150,000 listeners in Central and Northern B.C. According to CFNR Terrace program director Craig Ellis, the Vancouver station will have a full news operation with on-air talent and community outreach staff.

“CKUR will provide an aboriginal perspective in Vancouver radio reflecting the values and cultures of the three primary First Nations communities in the broadcast area — Squamish Nation, Tsleil-Waututh Nation and the Musqueam Indian Band,” said CFNR in a release.
