Baffinland visits North Baffin communities for Phase 2 meetings

Press Release

From January 7 to 11, Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (Baffinland) representatives visited Hall Beach, Igloolik, Arctic Bay, Pond Inlet, and Clyde River to discuss Baffinland’s proposed Phase 2 project. The meetings provided an opportunity for community residents to learn more about Baffinland’s proposed Phase 2 project and ask questions about the project plans and provide their input.

The meetings included an overview presentation of the proposed project, as well as an animated video, poster stations, and detailed 3D models of each of the project description areas. Samples of iron ore from the mine were also presented to community residents along with a general overview of the mining process at Mary River Mine, which includes no processing or tailings.

“Baffinland is committed to meaningful consultation with the North Baffin communities which includes answering questions and incorporating community input into our plans for the future of the Mary River Mine.” said Megan Lord-Hoyle, director of corporate sustainability, sustainable development. “These meetings are the first of many visits we’ll be making to the communities as we look to get their feedback on the project.”

Baffinland will be hosting a series of activities related to Phase 2 over the next few months. This includes Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit workshops and working group meetings with community members, as well as more community events. More information on these events will be posted on Baffinland’s website and Facebook page.
