Feds, province funding aquaculture certification for Indigenous fish farm – Cape Breton Post

A growing Indigenous fish processing facility that includes a hatchery and grow out site has received government funding to support certification and to increase its access to international markets.

The We’koqma’q First Nation in Inverness County officially took over the fish processing facility in 2015. At the time, it employed eight people but has since grown and now has a workforce of more than 50 community members from We’koqma’q.

The federal government is providing $217,687 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency for the We’koqma’q First Nation to obtain best aquaculture practices (BAP) certification for its high-value fish farm.
