Little Pine First Nation votes on $6.8 million settlement – MBC Network Radio

Aug 10, 2018

The Little Pine First Nation will vote today regarding ratifying their treaty annuities claim settlement with the federal government. The approximately $6.8 million claim, settled last December was for non-treaty payment of $5 per band member yearly from 1885-1888, following the Louis Riel rebellion.

As part of the settlement, there is a payout of two $350 payments to members to be made in December. A 50-year legacy trust is being established with the remaining settlement dollars. The vote is taking place on the First Nation.

The Little Pine First Nation is voting today on a proposed $6.8 million treaty annuities claim settlement. The First Nation successfully claimed to the federal government that Crown failed to pay each band member $5 annually from 1885-1888, following the Louis Riel rebellion. If the vote, taking place on the First Nation is ratified, members will see two $350 payouts to be completed by Christmas. The remaining money will be held in a legacy trust.
