Morning Brief: Liberals’ emergency bill seeks to give government unprecedented tax and spending powers – iPolitics

A bill to be introduced by the federal Liberals on Tuesday would grant them sweeping powers to spend government funds and raise taxes without getting Parliament’s approval, Global News reported on Monday night.

Opposition parties were surprised by the bill’s contents, which would give Finance Minister Bill Morneau powers typically only afforded through the Canadian Constitution to the parliamentary branch.

A limited number of MPs from all parties were recalled to Ottawa to pass the government’s multibillion-dollar COVID-19 aid package.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said in a statement Monday his party “will authorize whatever spending measures are justified to respond to the situation, but we will not sign a blank cheque.”
