Quebec election: ‘Situation is dramatic,’ Legault says of Nunavik suicides – Montreal Gazette

The CAQ leader calls for more Indigenous hiring and more emphasis on education to lower dropout rates among First Nations.

VAL D’OR — François Legault said on Monday a Coalition Avenir Québec government would listen to the recommendations of the Viens Commission.

The Viens Commission was created in 2016 to study the relationship between the Quebec government — and its employees — and Indigenous people. It came in response to allegations that Sûreté du Québec officers physically and sexually assaulted Indigenous women in Val d’Or.

However, the commission has expanded to study the actions — or inaction — of other government departments.

Among the issues that have been raised is the suicide rate in Nunavik, which is around 10 times the Quebec average.
