Happy Friday (the 13th) readers!
Conservative caucus members confirmed that Andrew Scheer will remain as party leader until a successor is chosen in a hastily-called caucus meeting on Thursday evening.
Tom Kmiec, the party’s national caucus chair, exited the 45-minute meeting to tell reporters that Conservative MPs unanimously decided to back Scheer as “full” leader until a replacement is selected through a party leadership contest.
“By unanimous agreement, we want Andrew Scheer to stay on as full leader until such time as the party members decide on who should replace him as permanent leader,” he said.
Scheer resigned on Thursday amid revelations that he had used money from the Conservative Fund to partly finance his children’s private school tuition — something many Tories were unaware about. One vocal critic of Scheer called the move “indefensible.”
