There was a brief exchange between Amaranth Mayor Bob Currie and members of Dufferin County council after a proposal was made to introduce a land acknowledgement to Indigenous peoples at the beginning of each meeting.
Mono Deputy Mayor John Creelman put forward a motion to explore a way to credit Indigenous peoples that lived in Dufferin County before European settlement.
The motion also seeks input from local Indigenous leaders on how best to phrase the acknowledgement.
Creelman explained that it identifies the Indigenous population “that was here long before you and I were.” He said it’s important to recognize their role in history and how they cared for the land that Dufferin is now built on.
